quilt buttonFrom: Sharon Kubich Subject: Block Central Calculator

BlockCentral offers a ton of free quilt and block patterns, beside the free patterns check out the calculator they offer.

A common scenario for quilters is trying to figure out how many width of fabric strips to cut in order to get the number of squares that a pattern calls for.  You have to pull out the old calculator, figure out how many squares a single strip will yield from the width of fabric that you are using, and divide the number of squares you need by the number of squares a single strip will yield. Hmmm...that can get complicated.  I found this online tool that will tell you the number of strips you need to cut simply by answering three easy questions.  You can even print out the results, just in case you are forgetful (like me)!  Give it a try, you just might find yourself spending less time calculating and more time making quilts! You'll find the calculator here.

Have fun,
Sharon

Aardvark has great sales and it’s really worth the trip because all the fabrics, except the newest really are 30% off....I just thought I’d pass it along to you and then if it appropriate you could pass it on to the others.

quilt buttonFrom: Sharon Kubich Subject: Pillow case project
Karen Kilts, a former member of the Evening Star Quilter’s Guild, contacted me (Sharon Kubich) asking if any of our members might be interested in making pillowcases to be distributed to children with cancer throughout the area. Karen has assembled approximately 50 pillowcases herself and plans on sending them out to be distributed shortly.

Karen cuts her pillowcases 27 inches long and the "cuff" (or border) 12 1/2 inches long; both are cut the width of the fabric. She then sews them together. Because the children receiving them have immune problems, the pillowcases need to be washed, ironed and folded and then placed into a quart sized plastic bag.

This would be a great way to use up some left over fabric and a wonderful way to put a smile on the faces of children who otherwise may not have a reason to smile.

A woman named Helen O’Brien delivers the pillowcases to the hospitals where they are needed the most. If you do take the time to help out and create some pillowcases, please mail them directly to:

Helen O’Brien
1711 State Street
Mertztown, PA 19539
(610) 682-7888

Rosemarie Greg, a member of the Evening Star Quilter’s Guild, would be happy to give you a 5 minute demo on making a pillowcase at any of our meetings. See me or Rosemarie to set up a time.

There is no time frame on this request.

Thank you for your generosity.

Your president,
Sharon Kubich

quilt buttonFrom: Jane Schreffler Subject: Barn quilts
A friend of mine has been delivering Meals on Wheels. The woman she helps has a quilt pattern painted on the side of her barn, (which I have seen) in the Mt. Bethel, Pa area. The woman said if you google "barnquilts" you get pretty nice results......which I did. It's a list of places in the midwest that has barn, houses, churches, etc. quilts on them. Really nice web pages. I enjoyed seeing them and are sure you will enjoy them also.

quilt buttonFrom: Kimberly Clark Subject: Just wanted to share with you
Just wanted to let you know that I am participating in this quilt block a week/bible study. If you think it may be something some of our members would like to do I can reteach it at some point at my home. It started today. I will be doing my first block today. The one with the heart appliqued named "Immanue"

THE QUILTING THE NAMES OF JESUS GROUP represents a 26 week bible study and 30 block sampler quilt project that will reflect the 26+ names of Jesus. The group will be using Ann Spangler's Praying The Names of Jesus (2006) as a bible study and devotional guide. The anticipated start date of this weekly bible study and quilt project is January 7, 2008. Each week we will study one of the different names and titles given to Jesus in the Bible, revealing important insights about his life and ministry. In addition, a 6" quilt block pattern will be featured, symbolizing each name. The quilt pattern is available from http://www.patternsoffaith.com

Alternatively, group members may choose their own quilt block design for their Quilting the Names of Jesus Quilt.

This group is open to women who are interested in combining quilting with an interactive weekly on-line bible study. The 30 block quilt project is mainly comprised of pieced blocks although applique is required for 6 of the blocks. Membership will be approved by the list moderators. Intermediate-advanced quilting skills are recommended for successful completion of the suggested quilt project. Active participation in the bible study is always welcomed and encouraged :)
